Tips for Real Estate Owners, HOAs, Property Managers with Heating Oil Tanks

February 18, 2016

Do you have a heating oil tank on your property?

On average, cleanup costs for spills originating from a heating oil tank range from $10,000 to $50,000.

Consider taking these responsible steps to avoid the accidental release of heating oil:

Inspect tank and attached components frequently

If you have an underground tank, review records of purchase and become knowledgeable about the size, location, materials it is made from (i.e. steel is the most common).

Replace old tanks

A good estimate is to consider replacement after 15 years.

Have good communications with your heating oil provider and/or heating contractor

This includes keeping a consistent clean/repair/inspection schedule; retain all delivery receipts; mark fill pipes, and inform your delivery company of any special circumstances or requirements.
