Project # 35730

Roof Damage Claim Investigation

VERTEX was retained by a commercial insurance carrier to investigate alleged damages to the roof coverings reportedly caused by hail. The site consisted of an approximately 15,000 square foot, 1 story building with multiple tenant spaces.  The roof consisted of a modified bitumen membrane.

VERTEX’s scope of work included a site visit to record observations and measurements, photographic documentation, interviews with applicable parties, meteorological research, and the performance of two test cuts of roofing materials for hail damage.  Laboratory analysis was performed in accordance with ASTM D3746 “Standard Test Method for Impact Resistance of Bituminous Roofing Systems.”

Based on the investigation, VERTEX concluded that hail damage did not occur to the roof covering of the building. The weather data supported that no hail events had occurred since 2009 at the subject property with hailstones larger than 0.5 inches in diameter, which was not sufficient size to damage modified bitumen roofing.  Our conclusions were further supported by the laboratory analysis report which indicated that the membrane was not fractured.
